My Weight Watcher's Journey So Far
You all know me or know of me here at work. I joined Weight Watchers on June 10th, 2002. This was the best decision I have made in my life in the last three years. Let me give you a little background information to make this story more real for you. Three years ago, I went through some personal loss that affected my life very deeply and even though I showed a happy face at work, I was depressed and handling the depression through eating. I had gotten up to almost 300 lbs. I realized what was going on and started working on losing weight by myself, but had hit a point where I kept losing and gaining the same 20 lbs. When my employer offered the in house Weight Watcher Meetings, I decided to give it a chance. I thought maybe the structure and support would help me.
At the first meeting, I was weighed and the scale registered 266 lbs. No wonder I was having problems walking my dog in the morning. I had gotten to the point that I did not feel like going out at all. I was embarrassed by the way I looked and what people must be saying. Yes It had been worse last fall but I was sick of getting tired climbing a single flight of stairs. I also had a great fear of my mother getting a call saying I had had a heart attack. I am 43 years old and I was starting to feel like I was much older.
In a short 9 weeks, I have lost 30.2 lbs. The weight loss is great but there is even more to the story. I have more energy now than I have had in the last 3 years. I sleep better at night. I enjoy walking my dog in the mornings. I am finally enjoying what I eat instead of eating to try and find happiness. This has helped my relationships with my friends, my family, and my performance at work has improved also.
One of the milestones in Weight Watchers is losing 10% of your original body weight. When this happens you are presented a metal key ring in the shape of a ten. There are other pieces that get added as you reach other goals along the way. The night I received my 10% key ring I felt better than I did at my college graduation. That little piece of metal let me know that I had accomplished a measurable goal in my journey to good health. That night I realized that yes I can control this and learn a new way to eat and think about food. Weight Watchers has given me the tools to take control of my life and get healthy. The added support that I get from our group leader, the other group members, my family, my friends, at the message boards available at weight watchers.com make this a fun and rewarding journey. That is the only way I can look at it. I am on a journey to a better life. I like myself a lot more than I have in a long time and know that that feeling will get even better in the future.
I am originally from North Carolina. I have lived in several different states as an adult. I currently live in Arizona. I'm a single gay man. I love dogs, reading, spending time with good friends. I am making a lot of new friends through weight watchers, but almost all of them are on the web and out of state. Someday, I hope to meet the right person to share my life with again.
